On April 11, 1972 the United Methodist Retirement Home, Inc. Board of Trustees adopted a motion to build another home in the Conference further east (of Durham) and to do this as soon as financially possible. The initial focus of this home would be nursing and healthcare with independent living added later. This was presented to the North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church and adopted at the 1972 session.

Between September 19, 1972 and the next Board meeting on April 10, 1973 the Long Range Planning Committee visited four communities. The group selected Lumberton as the place to develop their next retirement home with groundbreaking held on September 11, 1973. By March 1977 construction was complete and the community officially opened its doors to the first residents on April 1, 1977.

The following year brought more growth with the total license for 36 skilled nursing beds, 20 beds for “home for the aged”, and 34 retirement beds for a total of 90 accommodations. By September 1978, Wesley Pines pursued the addition of twelve independent living duplex cottages which came to fruition in 1981. Over the years the community has grown by constructing freestanding villas, duplex villas, and more recently, deluxe villas.

On January 1, 2000, The United Methodist Retirement Homes, Inc. entered into a management contract with Life Care Services, LLC of Des Moines, Iowa to manage and provide resources for each of their communities. Life Care Services is a national leader in retirement and health care services.

In April of 2011, Wesley Pines opened a brand new Assisted Living and Health Center that replaced its former building. There are 36 Assisted Living apartments and 62 skilled nursing beds. The Fisher Dining Room allows assisted and independent living residents refined yet casual restaurant style dining. The fellowship center provides space for a variety of activities and worship services.
